Over the winter we had over a dozen hedgehogs brought to us that were either ill or injured and needed treatment, or they were young and too small to survive hibernation.

Myxomatosis – The Importance of Vaccination
Many people purchase their pet rabbits from pet shops, where they are offered little if no advice and the pets are certainly not vaccinated. Each year thousands of wild and pet rabbits die a painful death from what is a preventable virus, myxomatosis.

Start of the Chick Season
Springtime is a very busy time for us as we receive lots of orphaned baby animals, that need to be hand reared and cared for. In particular we rear a lot of baby birds, yesterday we received our very first of the season, a young collared dove.

A Review of 2009
2009 was the second complete calendar year that Brinsley Animal Rescue existed and our first complete year as a charity. We have had many challenges, many low points and many successes which have helped us carry on with the thankless task of rescuing 600 animals each year.

Give a bunny a home
Unfortunately, at this time of year rabbits and pets get such a raw deal. Many people simply want to get rid of their childrens animals just before Christmas to make way for the new toys.

Battery Hen Rescue
We have rescued 80 ex-battery chickens this week, taking our total for the year to over 400. These poor girls live an awful life, in extremely cramped cages, each hen has no more space than an A4 piece of paper. The flock is usually sent for slaughter at 12 to 18 months and replaced with new…

Buzzard on the Mend
We don’t often rescue birds of prey, but when we do we are amazed by their beauty. This guy we believe has been handled and kept in a very small cage where he could not fly. Therefore he has little muscle tone and cannot currently be released into the wild.

Huge thank you!
We just want to say a huge, huge thank you to everyone that helped out and supported our first open day on Sunday. We are so, so grateful to so many people. We raised nearly £2,000 with more money still being pledged which is more than we ever hope for.
