Last weekend we took a call from a cat and dog rescue charity that had taken a call about some pigs kept in appalling conditions. We were asked to see if we could take mum and 6 piglets in.

We did initially say no, as we are full. We already have 10 pigs and can only take on more, as and when we re-home to create space, unfortunately we have only re-homed one pig this year, but had to turn away over 80 since January.

The situation was so desperate with this young girl; we had to agree to help. Primrose and we now call her, was bought from a breeder and kept on a concrete patio, with no shelter, no bedding and was being fed only potato peelings.

She subsequently gave birth to 7 piglets. She was raising these on the concrete, with no shelter, she had to endure the heat of the sun, the cold and driving rain. Before they were rescued, one piglet had died. Primrose herself is very thin, and young, probably only 8 months old and must have been sold already pregnant.

The owner had no documentation for the pigs, a legal requirement, the breeder in Coventry not only sold a pregnant, young sow, but also let her go without any home checks or legal documentation.

Primrose is understandably very nervous and protective of her beautiful 6 babies. We will work with her, slowly gaining her trust. Her babies will be health checked, wormed and neutered. In a month or so we can start looking to re-home them. We always carryout home checks and offer advice, we do all the things breeders, driven my money do not.

Two weeks ago we took in a baby stoat, he was found on a path with a small injury, you can just see the healed wound in this photo.

He was very young, had no fur and his eyes still closed, this photo was taken two weeks after the rescue.

Here he is now at 3 weeks old, we are feeding him about every two hours day and night and keeping him in an incubator and is so far doing well.

It is still early stages but we are hopeful as he is a little fighter and taking his milk well. Here he is sleeping soundly after a good feed.

A member of the public found these two birds just in a box, late at night.

They have been health checked and are now in or main aviary and as you can see, both in happy, inseparable and a right pair of book ends.

A simple rescue for us, much better than having suffering or orphaned animals brought in.

A few weeks ago we received a call about a loose goat, which had been seen in a hedge bottom alongside a road for a couple of weeks. The worried caller said that the poor goat wasn’t in great shape and was very thin. He had managed to trace the owner through the ear tag, who stated that she had escaped and didn’t want her back.

We took her in and named her Geraldine. We quarantined her and gave her a good check and wormed her. She was in a poor condition, her hooves were severely overgrown, preventing her from walking properly, she was also very thin, and probably the most nervous goat we have ever had in.

Geraldine is very old at 15 and incredible nervous, so we had to find her a special home. Fortunately we have re-homed several goats to a great couple who adore animals and have taken her in today. They will give her all the love, attention and special treatment she needs and deserves. We are confident that she will soon settle in with her new friends.

Flossy is large, she weights around 10 kg and so needs to be homed to an adult, ideally someone with experience with rabbits. She is handle-able, but being so large she is also strong and therefore not suitable to be handled by children.

Flossy needs to be homed with a friend, in large cage and fox proof run. Flossy will soon be neutered, but we are looking for a suitable home now, along with 40 odd other rabbits in our care.

Meet our latest rescued sheep, this little girl has escaped almost certain death.

Our currently unnamed lamb, was found by a member of the public on their garden patio of all places. So she was contained whilst they tried to locate her owners.

Through her ear tag, she was traced back to a farm who sold her at market and therefore no-longer owner her, there is no other trace of her new owners. So our new rescue seems to have escaped, she has no doubt escaped from a certain death at the slaughter house and from ending up being butchered.

So we now need your help to name her, we need a name that’s fitting for this little survivor, escaped from a horrible future and found in the snow. She will now live with us until we find a life-long home, she’s a luckily girl.

Please email your suggestions to us, or send a message via our contact form;

We have 7 little guinea pigs are all of varying ages and are all looking for homes. They either need to go together or in pairs or to live with existing guinea pigs that someone may have.

Two of them are special guineas that will need a special home, one is blind in an eye and sometimes gets bullied although she does snuggle up with the others so we are reluctant to remove her from the group. The other has a head tilt and seems older than the others.

Every week without fail, we receive a call or an email asking us to take on more pets.

We have a non-destruct policy, we never destroy an animal unless it is in the animals best interest, due to ill health or injury. Therefore we can only take in more animals when we create space by re-homing.

But too often, people go to pets shops and breeders where they receive no or little advice, where the pets are not neutered, not vaccinated and often not even health checked. When people buy pets, they overlook the estimated 35,000 rabbits alone left in rescue centres without a permanent home.

In 2012 we unfortunately had to turn away ten times more rabbits than we re-homed. We have already turned away more rabbits this year, than we re-homed in the whole of 2012.

Please, never buy from pets shops and breeders, come to a rescue and offer a loving home to a previously neglected, unwanted, unloved companion.

Pets

Unfortunately too many people treat pets as the disposable commodity, it is all too easy to get a pet without any checks, advice or neutering, then give it up.

As we are run solely by volunteers and therefore have limited time and funds, we can only take on so many animals, we cannot compromise the ones in our care by taking on too much. So generally its one out, one in, when we are full, we unfortunately have to say no.

Last year, we had to turn away 568 animals, more than any previous year. In fact we only rehomed 4 pigs, but turned away 101, we rehomed only 26 rabbits, but turned away 208.

Wild Animals

We rescued 228 wild animals, these included 6 birds of prey, 90 pigeons, 55 hedgehogs and 4 foxes.

Click Here – One of 3 Tawny Owls we released.

Click Here – A pigeon having a broken leg repaired

Click Here – A hedgehog being treated for balloon syndrome

Farm Animals

We rescued 594 farm animals, of these 428 were ex-egg laying chickens, 24 cockerels and took in 8 ponies and rehomed 8 goats.

Click Here - Read about Tommy the pig rescued from a butcher shop back yard

We do though have lots to celebrate, although we had to turn away 568 animals, we did care for nearly 900. We released animals back into the wild, which would have otherwise perished, we rehomed 100′s of animals into loving homes.

And for the rest, they receive sanctuary here, loved and looked after until they find forever homes.

After a few hours in an incubator, he was warm enough to be force fed and treated. Over the next few days he gained strength, within a week he was eating by himself.

This weekend we gave him his last feast before releasing back into the wild, where he belongs, fully recovered.

This little chap is Walter, he is now only 8 days old and being hand reared. Born on 28 December, Walters 5 other siblings unfortunately died, we received a call to take on the only survivor.

We are having to feed him every two hours during the day and 4 hours over night, without having mum around, he is under a heat lamp in our new animal hospital.

Fortunately before we took this little cheeky character on, the former owners managed to give him some of mums milk, so the colostrum will increase his chances of survival.

This pig is one of the first rescues of the year but shortly after he arrived we had 2 more seperate calls for unwanted so called micro-pigs! The situation with unwanted pet pigs is absolutely dire. They are notoriously difficult to rehome because we tell people the realities of responsible pig ownership.

Although very small now at around 600g, this chap will end up about 50-60 kG and be very, very strong.

In 2012, we rehomed only 4 pigs, as we can only take in more as we rehome, we had to unfortunately turn away 101.

Earlier this year we were approached by the Executors of the estate of a kind lady, who, had unfortunately passed away. Being an animal lover, she had left her estate to animal charities.

We put together an application for the funding to complete our wildlife hospital, which has been in progress for almost a year now.

We were all jumping over the moon with joy, when we heard that our application was successful and now the funds have been received. This is the largest donation we have ever received, without this kind donation, our hospital would have to wait for many more years of fundraising.

We have now received £15,200 to complete the hospital and work is now almost complete. The units and worktops are in, floor layed, heating on and we have running hot can cold water.

We have never met the late Kathleen Robinson, but we very much hope that she would be very proud of how we have spent her legacy. We feel that Kathleen’s kindness and compassion towards animals in her lifetime, will now continue for many many years, thanks to her legacy, we can finish our well equipment animal hospital and treat animals for many years.
