Each year we work with some fantastic people who rescue around a hundred annually. The lucky rescued ponies become pampered pets or go to rescue centres around the country, to a better future where they will be loved and cared for, not eaten.

To date we have now rescued 9 Dartmoor ponies. We spend hundreds of hours turning them from wild ponies, into beautiful tame ponies that are rehomed as pets in  life-long homes.

These two will be no exception, we have already started working on taming them, but it will be many months before they will be tame enough and ready to be castrated, wormed and ready for a new home.

Once more we find this sad situation. Yet again many young Dartmoor Ponies are facing slaughter as the unwanted ponies become animal feed. A century ago 30,000 of these ponies roamed the moors, now just 1,500 remain.  They are rarer than giant pandas yet get little coverage and media spotlight.  They are part of our heritage in this country yet fetch no money at market and simply get slaughtered every year for pet food and lion and tiger food at the local zoo.

This year 700 have already been slaughtered for pet food, how could we say no!  Last year taught us so, so much about these delightful animals.  Having recently seen the four ponies we rescued last year in their new homes, we have realised that we should offer a place for some more of these beautiful animals.

Today rescued 3 of these ponies as the situation became URGENT.  Brinsley Animal Rescue now needs the funds to pay for their up keep and treatment until we can re-home them. Are you able to help with donations towards transportation, gelding, feed, bedding and wormers ?

We need to raise at least £1200 to pay for these beautiful ponies.  Transportation costs alone comes to £300 before they even arrive at the sanctuary.  Every month we operate on a hand to mouth basis and scrape by.  Of recent we have taken in more and more animals whereby the previous owners simply couldn’t afford their vet bills and treatment.  We have taken on huge vet bills and added feed costs as the price of hay escalates to almost double what we were paying just a year ago.

As you can imagine having been abused in the past, they need to regain their confidence. Billy will come to you although his friend Smarite is a bit more weary.

Billy is a miniature Shetland, smaller than teddy our Ram, whilst Smartie is a standard Shetland Pony.

We are looking for a life-long home where these two friends can live together in a stable environment.

Back in February, 150 ponies from one farm alone, were to be rounded up and off to market, their future sold for a few pounds to a trader, to become pet food. Fotunately 42 were rescued, and of these we took on 4.

Over the past few months we have been working very hard with them to get them tame enough and handleable to be castrated and rehomed.

They are now safe in fantasic new homes, close by so thay we can continue to keep to follow their progress.

We now desperately need funds to help with these 3 colts and a filly. We have had to pay for microchipping, passport, transportation, vets fees, food and bedding.  We were only planning to take in 3 but when we heard that there was 1 colt left that was destined to be shot we had to step in and help at the last minute.

We are now working daily with these ponies and already they are becoming friendly. In a few weeks they will be vaccinated and the males gelded (castrated).  It is our aim that eventually they can be found loving homes. They are adorable but still so frightened.

We encourage any of our supporters to raise money for us.  Many people come up with money making ideas but Jon and Beth are tied up with the day to day running of the sanctuary and mountains of paperwork that is needed and simply don’t have enough time to do lots of fundraising events.

If you want to raise money by having a carboot, stall or sponsored event then please let us know.  We can provide you with a display board, leaflets and collection tub. There are lots of ways to raise money and help us financially.  Funds are really low at the moment but we felt that we couldn’t let these poor young ponies down.

Yesterday Coco found herself with 2 new friends – Rosie and Charlotte. Like Coco, Charlotte has laminitis so will need special care.

These 2 ponies will stay at the sanctuary for the rest of their lives.  We have decided not to adopt any ponies out to new owners.  Instead if people want to ‘adopt a pony’ then they will pay us a set monthly adoption fee but the pony will remain at the sanctuary.  This way we will ensure that we can oversee the care of the ponies and will mean that the ponies will not get sold on and on. Adopters may visit and care for the ponies and if feasible ride them.  The charity will remain the owner of the ponies and be responsible for vet, farrier, dental and feed bills.

Coco must have a strict diet, not be exposed to rich grass and receive regular exercise and attention to ensure her condition is controlled.  She is a beautiful and well behaved pony who has already got many fans.

Due to Coco’s condition she is not up for rehoming. She has been very fortunate to have found a kind sponsor who will pay for her up keep.
